Millom Heritage Museum And Visitor Centre

Old Station Building
Station Road, Millom LA18 5AA
01229 772555

Access to Millom Heritage Museum And Visitor Centre is via the Platform of the Millom Railway Station, opposite the War Memorial, Station Rd., Millom.

A remarkable Museum is right on your doorstep. Millom Folk Museum, now Millom Heritage Museum and Visitor Centre, has been awarded Accreditation status because it meets nationally agreed standards on collection care, how to govern museum management and the provision of information and services to visitors. Come and see us!

Prepare to embark upon an exhilarating journey! Experience the fascinating and unique history of Millom! Study the life and times of world famous writer and poet Norman Nicholson. Be transported back in time to the workings of Hodbarrow iron mining, a video documentary takes you to the beginnings of a great industry. See for yourself an actual mine cage as well as a full-scale model of a Hodbarrow mine drift.

With sea and shipping playing a major role, get an insight into the harshness of those times. Reminiscent of streets in market towns, facades of shop fronts greet you. Displaying original merchandise, the authentic shop reconstruction creates nostalgia. A glowing fire, hotpot on the table, our 19th century cottage re-creation portrays everyday life for a miner’s family.

Have you ever wondered about the importance of industry? From Blacksmiths to swill makers, the workhouse, farming, the railway, they all have an historical place here. From archaeological finds, garments through the ages, right up to modern day where restoration of a lighthouse is portrayed by Haverigg School and our new Interactive Whiteboard brings the Millom Heritage Museum And Visitor Centre into the 21st century.

Enjoy your encounter! Make this a special day by discovering the richness of Millom’s Great History!
