Fishing around Millom
Area residents and visitors have a wide variety of types of angling to cater for most appetites.
Sea fishing
Great beach fishing at Silecroft, good parking and toilets, easy access from the top of the beach to firm sand as the tide ebbs. Good fish can be caught two hours before high tide up to two hours after, best at dusk or into the night. Many anglers for bass and cod prefer to fish two hours before low tide to two hours after, again at night. Most baits can produce fish including lugworm, ragworm, crab, mackerel fillets, squid or a cocktail of two or more.
Being a member of the South Cumbria Sea Sports Association Ltd. is very advantageous for boat owners who love fishing. The Association has two David Brown tractors for launching small boats belonging to members. Others launching using 4-wheel drive cars should use caution, as it is common to become stuck in the soft shingle.
Fishing from the blocks at Hodbarrow Nature Reserve can also be very productive. Some blocks can be very risky for young or old, especially if wet. Not all are level. However, there are several popular blocks which do produce fish regularly to bottom or float fished baits and to spinning or lures. Parking is very close, but there are no toilets.
Coarse fishing
Millom & District Angling Association control two ponds at Broughton. The ponds mainly contain rudd and a few carp to about 15lb. Day tickets or weekly permits may be bought from the information centre at Broughton. No night fishing or camping, only one rod may be used and the use of maggots is banned. Park in the square at Broughton and it is a half mile walk past the toilets along the old railway track.
Next nearest coarse fishing is run by Furness Fishing Association (www.ffacoarse.org.uk) with several ponds at Roanhead, on the road into Barrow-in-Furness and at Ormsgill Reservoir. Details and day tickets can be obtained from the Angling & Hiking Centre, 275-277 Rawlinson Street, Barrow, ‘phone 01229 829661. FFA also have a very informative website at http://www.tomo.clara.net giving full details of their rules, waters, maps, and fish present.
There is also reasonable fishing on the Ulverston Canal (www.ulverstonangling.org) where day tickets are available on the bank. See also (www.barrowsportscouncil.org.uk)
Pike anglers are well catered for by the larger Lakeland waters of Coniston, Windermere, and most other well-known lakes. Fishing is free where there is public access to the bank, but an Environment Agency rod licence is required for the over 12's.

For all coarse and game fishing, please ensure you have the appropriate National Rod Licence if you are over 12 years old. Please also ensure you follow the waterside and country codes and take home all litter. Do remember to fish safely at all times and to let people know where you are fishing and at what times. When sea fishing, always be aware of tides as these vary from daily. Ensure you are always aware of what is behind you so that incoming tides never cut you off from the shore.
